Howarth/Spring Lake Trails

5 miles - This run starts at the upper parking lot in Howarth Park and proceeds down several unmarked trails towards the water storage facilities and then heads along some unmarked trails thru Spring Lake Park towards Annadel. Turns left onto the Rough Go Trailhead and almost immediately make the first left back towards Spring Lake. This run has relatively mild elevation gains but many of the trails are unmarked making it easy to make a wrong turn.

  • Follow Old Fishermans Trail (first dirt trail to the left at the start of the bike path in Howarth Park)
  • .3 miles - cross over bike path and enter Bay Area Ridge Trail
  • .7 miles - trail ends. Make right up bike path for couple yards and stay straight to get on Bay Area Ridge Trail.
  • .9 miles - stay on Ridge trail (hugging first water storage facility)
  • 1.2 miles - Continue along Ridge Trail. Off to your left will be Picnic area and eventually the boat ramp launch area.
  • 1.4 miles - You will Cross over South Saddle Dam (enjoy view)
  • 1.6 miles- run straight past bathrooms and follow signs for Horse Trailer Parking to right.
  • 1.9 miles - Pass Horse Trailer parking and pass gate. You will be on an umarked fire road
  • 2.4 miles - Make Left on Rough Go trail head after bridge.
  • 2.55 miles - Go up Rough about .15 miles and make first left back towards Spring Lake
  • 2.60 miles -Soon after Trail will Y. Go right (easy to miss)
  • 2.85 miles - When near picnic area, follow trail to right even though it seems to go opposite direction.
  • 3.2 miles - Follow Spring Lake Horse Loop past Environmental Discovery Center
  • 3.25 miles - Shortly after Center the trail ends
  • >3.3 miles - Turn right onto bike path cross over and get on trail
  • 3.5 miles - trail ends again at bike path.
  • 3.5 miles - turn right on bike path and follow up and over main dam
  • 4.2 miles - turn right onto trail before bike path turns left.
  • 4.4 miles - Go up west saddle dam and make left at top
  • 4.5 miles - cross over bike path and enter Ridge Trail (same trail from earlier)
  • 4.7 miles - cross over bike path and go left on Fishermans trail back to start
  • 5 miles - FINISH

Directions to Howarth Park: -

  • From Highway 12 East Bound from 101
  • At the stoplight continue straight onto Hoen Ave.
  • Take a left at the light onto Summerfield Ave.
  • Take a right into Howarth park
  • Continue up the road and meet at the Upper Parking Lot
